Voters head to polls in local and mayoral elections

VOTERS are going to the polls in local elections and mayoral elections in England, Scotland and Wales.

Some 4,851 council seats are being contested in 88 authorities, including all of Scotland’s 32 councils, 22 Welsh councils and 27 English counties. 

The first “metro mayors” are also being elected to head new combined authorities covering Greater Manchester, the West Midlands, the Liverpool City-Region, the West of England, Tees Valley and Cambridgeshire & Peterborough.

In addition, there are mayoral elections to head the local authroties in Doncaster and North Tyneside.

Polls opened at 7am and will close at 10pm.

Results will be announced throughout Friday.
