TaxPayers Alliance app tracks council spending
A NEW APP that allows people to access data on their local council's spending has been launched by the TaxPayers' Alliance.
The free app, YourTPA, includes data on councillors' allowances, compensation claims paid by local authorities and how many employees at a particular council earn over £100,000 a year.
It also has information on how much council tax has increased in real terms over the last 20 years, how many assets a council owns and what they are, how much office space is provided to trade union representatives and how many artworks a council owns, as well as how many are on display.
In addition, the app outlines the size of a council's liabilities.
YourTPA is available for Apple and Android devices.
John O'Connell, chief executive of the TaxPayers' Alliance, said: "Technology is playing an important role in making it easier for taxpayers to hold local politicians to account and promote transparency in local government. Anyone with a smartphone or tablet can now examine the performance of their own council, measure it against neighbouring authorities and decide for themselves if councils are delivering value for taxpayers' hard-earned money.
"The TPA believes that transparency and public scrutiny are crucial for cutting out government waste and this free app provides every user with the opportunity to take part in that process."
