Bristol will European Green Capital for 2015 after winning an international award fr its high environmental standards and sustainable development.

Salford City Council has cut its energy bills by more than £1m since 2007, despite a "dramatic" rise in prices.

Green schemes such as improved heating controls to limit gas use and cavity wall and loft insulation have been used at a range of council-owned buildings, including schools, libraries and leisure centres.

The authority said its energy savings have helped to cut carbon emissions by around 20 per cent.
